Mystic Magic: Reality Shifting
Grace Cavanaugh ~ Editor in Chief
Recently I have been asked about reality shifting. About three months ago, there was a rash of attacks against popular Witchtokers for denouncing so-called “reality shifting,” where people would go to their favorite anime, or Hogwarts, or some other fictional place.
Initially I, and the popular Witchtokers, took it to be some sort of imaginative exercise. These people were disassociating from reality and going into someplace else, for whatever reason, and I thought it was more like lucid dreaming than astral projection.
For those that do not know, astral projection is intentionally having an out of body experience where you travel the universe and beyond. Many pagan witches use astral projection as a way to talk to their deities or any higher being wishing to get into contact with them. A common saying I have heard is that if your ears, or just one ear, is ringing, someone wants to meet you on the astral.
Astral projection is not easy, and can be very dangerous. There are certain precautions you must take and, like working with deities, it is not recommended for beginners.
Reality shifting, when it first came to popularity, was compared to astral projection, and rather incorrectly at that. For the most part, the people who were reality shifting were not using protection, were not witches, and probably just thought it was a trend on TikTok.
A few days ago, my sister sent me a text about trying reality shifting herself, so I talked to my housemate about it. My housemate studies anthropology, and language, but she has information concerning native practices. According to her, native peoples have been practicing reality shifting, with the help of certain naturally occurring plants, as rights of passage and rituals for many, many years.
Personally, I think that this is another TikTok trend, where people use their imaginations to build and control a world of their choosing. Not many, if any at all, have native connections, and I highly doubt those that use reality shifting as an important ritual would be happy with tweens using it to date Draco Malfoy.
Regardless, this just brings up the importance of research. Protection is a must, and never do something without having thoroughly looked into it.
