Westminster Canterbury of Lynchburg Reacts to Social Distancing With Care

By Jacklyn Harris ~ Guest Writer

The Director of Therapeutic Recreation, Joshlyn Harris states, “We are taking extreme caution at Westminster Canterbury because we realize our residents are at the most risk of death due to coronavirus.”

Due to the lack of medical supplies Harris has taken upon herself to sew masks for coworkers. All staff are required to wear masks during their shift.

Harris states “We are recording ourselves leading programs and activities for the residence to broadcast on our inhouse channel so they can participate. We are also providing opportunities for the residence to Facetime and Skype with their loved ones. Since we are currently allowing visitors on our campus.”

Recreation Coordinator, Megan Coleman, helps over forty residents a day Facetime or Skype their family members using her personal cell phone. Coleman states, “I have received a lot of positive feedback from the families of my residents. They tell me how much they miss their family and are very appreciative of what we are doing.”

Harris states, “Megan Coleman has done an exceptional job with the changes we have made here for these uncertain times. I have valued her as a staff member for many years and I am very thankful she voluntarily uses her personal cell phone to help the residence visit with their families.”

Harris states, “ We have had to become very creative in order to keep the residence happy. They are used to seeing their friends and family on a daily basis.”

Westminster Canterbury’s website states, “ Westminster Canterbury – Lynchburg prides itself on being a Life Plan Retirement community that is able to provide its residents with a community full of things to do.
