On Saturday, April 14,  Lynchburg College’s women’s softball team hosted Roanoke College in their annual military appreciation game. The day also doubled as their Code Red game. The double-header ended in a split, with each team taking home a win.

Roanoke won the first game with a final score of 12-7. The Hornets scored two runs in the first inning and five in the last, while Roanoke scored two in the first, seven in the last and one run each in the second, third and sixth innings.

Junior Taylor Mabry hit one over center field in the first inning, bringing in herself and another runner already at base, tying the game at two. In the seventh inning, sophomore Carol Oberhelman hit a grand slam which assisted in the scoring of four more runs. Even with this last minute push, the Lady Hornets were still short five runs from the Maroons of Roanoke.

The second game went to Lynchburg with a score of 2-0. The Hornets’ defense held the Maroons scoreless after dominating the offensive part of the first game. Pitcher Kayley Cox faced 23 batters and allowed three hits and two walks with four strikeouts.

This game places Lynchburg in fifth place in the ODAC with a conference record of 8-6 and a 22-10 record overall. The next game for the team will be a non-conference matchup at Averett University on April 17. Meanwhile, the next conference game will be April 21 against the Wasps of Emory & Henry.
