The Lynchburg College Men’s Soccer team faced off against Washington & Lee University and Eastern Mennonite University this past week, recording shutouts in both games. LC defeated both teams and moved their overall record to 8-1-1.
The Hornets took on Washington & Lee on Wednesday, Sept. 27 in another Code Red game and gave us a recap of last year’s Old Dominion Athletic Conference Championship game. LC beat Washington & Lee 2-1 in the championship and 1-0 on Wednesday night. The goal scored for LC came from junior defender Austin Kues after he deflected the shot attempt from first-year midfielder Michael Zhang into the back of the net.
Defensively, junior goalkeeper Dylan Mclaurin kept the Hornets in the lead with five saves. Washington & Lee took a total of five shots on goal, and Mclaurin denied all of them. Mclaurin has allowed only four goals this season. In a post-game interview with Joe Hutzler, the Voice of the Hornets, Mclaurin was asked about the backline of the LC defense and he stated:
“The guys in front of me are giving me a lot of good looks, even when the balls squeak by them I just try and do as I normally do, trust in the training I’ve done.”
The Voice of the Hornets also asked Mclaurin how they came out to play against Washington & Lee knowing they are ranked fifth in the Country. Mclaurin had this to say:
“We really just try and come out here and play our game. We know we’re a good team, have a solid back line, and we know we can score goals.”
Following this game, LC then took on EMU on Saturday, Sept. 30 and beat them 4-0. Scoring for LC in this game were senior forward Collin Kashmer, senior forward Jon Mackey, sophomore defender Michael Thompson and senior forward Fredy Flores. Thompson recorded his first career goal as a Hornet.
LC looks to continue their winning streak and conference play on Wednesday, Oct. 4 as they host Shenandoah University on Shellenberger Field.
